Biking in Karelia

This is a special trip for those who are keen on biking. You will get an opportunity to see old woodenchurches, chapels and peasants' houses as well as the oldest Russian cities. Visiting Khizhi will bring you back for several centuries and you will be able to imagine yourselves just  a simple Russian peasant living during the rule of Peter the Great and later.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

This is a biking trip and you will need some certain physical health to go through it. The trip includes 9-10 days of biking covering 30 - 40 km daily. The road is asphalt or good country. The traffic is very small. You will be able to see different types of landscape and beautiful sceneries, including the landscape typical for the places that had been covered by the glacier. Some of these landscapes are unique and typical only for the North-Western region of Russia.

GRADE AND QUALIFICATION

No special experience is required for the trip. The road is not difficult except for some rather steep upgrades on asphalt or good country roads. The bikes used are "for all roads".
You should be in good physical condition and have some biking experience to feel yourself comfortable when biking for several hours. Hiking experience is a plus as we will spend many nights in tents, sleeping in sleeping bags etc.
The trip is supported by a car, so that the bikers travel only with day-packs. For that purpose a comfortable rucksack is necessary. There are a camp-manager (and) a cook in the car to make the camp and dinner ready by the time when the bikers arrive to the next campsite.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION

Meals are included in the initial cost. We will eat in hotel and restaurants in Petrozavodsk. A cook will prepare food for the times of biking. We try to consider vegetarians, but unfortunately we can't always suit the same standard as in the western countries. If you are a vegetarian please inform us beforehand.
During the trek we live in tents. For that purpose a sleeping bag and mat will be necessary. It might be possible to rent them if you do not have one. The camp-manager will take care on organizing the campsite.
In Petrozavodsk we will spend a night in a comfortable hotel.

HEALTH MATTERS AND DOCUMENTS

There are no special inoculations needed to enter Russia. But taking into consideration that the trip passes through many wild forests, the inoculation against encephalitis will be an advantage.
A visa is required to enter Russia. Geographic Bureau may provide you with necessary documents to obtain visa in your Russian Consulate.
